Baseball Downed by Methodist, 10-6

The Nichols baseball team wrapped up their North Carolina trip with a 10-6 loss on Sunday afternoon to Methodist. With the loss, Nichols falls to 1-2 on the season, while Methodist remains undefeated, improving to 7-0.

Nichols took the lead right out of the gate as Johnny Knox followed up a leadoff single by Ben Jerome with an RBI double to give the Bison the early 1-0 advantage. Knox was thrown out attempting to advance to third on the play. The Monarchs answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out RBI base hit to tie the game up at one. Nichols catcher Ryan Birks threw out a Methodist base runner attempting to steal third, ending the threat.

Freshman Dylan Moran led off the top of the second inning for the Bison with a solo home run, the first of his collegiate career, to give Nichols the lead back. The Bison tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Karl Miller picked up an RBI base hit to score Taj Vera Cruz. Methodist answered right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to tie things up at three. RBI doubles from the Monarchs in the fifth inning gave the home team a 5-3 lead.

The Bison led off the top of the sixth with three straight singles before Jerome picked up another RBI with a base hit through the right side to score Cruz. After a pitching change by the Monarchs, Jerome stole second and Knox worked a walk. After a pop-out, Cameron Guerrera came up clutch with a two-out knock to score Miller, knotting the game up at five.

Methodist broke the tie in the seventh with three runs on three hits. Nichols picked up a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout by Jerome, but the Monarchs answered right back in the bottom of the eighth with two more runs of their own, extending their lead to 10-6. Nichols went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth as Chase Carroll earned the save for Methodist.

Guerrera and Miller each picked up three hits and an RBI on the day to lead the Bison offense. Nichols collected 17 hits but left 11 men on base. Sophomore Sean Ryan started the game on the bump for the Bison, pitching four innings and allowing three runs (two earned).

Nichols heads back north to take on Wheaton on Saturday, March 4 at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
